Gulbis and Schuettler advance

Ernests Gulbis of Latvia and Germany's Rainer Schuettler won their opening matches in the Farmers Classic tennis tournament Monday.
Gulbis, at 21 the youngest player in the 28-man field, was a 7-5, 7-5 winner over 22-year-old Lukas Lacko of Slovakia, and Schuettler, at 34 the oldest player in the event, was leading No. 7 seed Horacio Zeballos, 6-3, 3-0, when the Argentine retired with a left shoulder injury.
They were joined in the second round by No. 6 seed Janko Tipsaveric of Serbia, who downed Colombian Santiago Giraldo, 6-1, 6-0, while Israel's Dudi Sela outlasted Xavier Malisse of Belgium, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
Gulbis was playing for the first time since injuring a right hamstring muscle at the French Open on May 23.
Ivanovic, Radwanska thru
Serbia's Ana Ivanovic beat Alisa Kleybanova 6-3, 6-2 Monday in the first round of the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, ending a two-match losing streak to the 26th-ranked Russian.
Former top-ranked Dinara Safina of Russia, plagued by a lower back injury much of the year, lost to Japan's Kimiko Date Krumm, 4-6, 7-6(0), 6-2, in a match that lasted two hours, 22 minutes.
Agnieszka Radwanska needed three sets to beat South Africa's Chanelle Scheepers, 7-4, 4-6, 6-3 in her first-round match.
In other first round matches, Olga Govortsova of Belarus defeated Russia's Alla Kudryavtsena, 6-1, 6-1 and Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova downed American Hilary Barte, 6-2, 6-2.
Dolgopolov, Chela move up
Sixth-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine overcame Paolo Lorenzi of Italy 6-3, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (3) in a back-and-forth match Monday to reach the second round of the Croatia Open.
Dolgopolov will next meet Croatian wild card Franco Skugor, who routed two-time Umag finalist Filippo Volandri of Italy 6-2, 6-1 in 56 minutes.
Eighth-seeded Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentine also advanced after breaking Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo of Spain four times in a 6-4, 6-1 win.
Dushevina rallies
Defending champion Vera Dushevina of Russia struggled against Petra Martic before rallying for a 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 win in the first round of the Istanbul Cup.
Dushevina earned her first WTA Tour title in Istanbul last year but was broken seven times against her Croatian opponent Monday.
Sixth-seeded Andrea Petkovic of Germany easily advanced by beating Pemra Ozgen of Turkey 6-2, 6-1, while No. 4 Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan lost 6-4, 7-6 (5) to Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland. French Open champion and top-seeded Francesca Schiavone of Italy led Anne Keothavong of Britain 4-0 when their match was suspended because of rain.
