Melzer beats Schwank to advance in Hamburg

seeded Juergen Melzer of Austria beat Argentina's Eduardo Schwank in straight sets (6-4, 6-1) at the German Open Wednesday, but five other seeded players were eliminated in second-round action.
Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan edged fifth-seeded Nicolas Almagro of Spain 7-6 (5), 7-6 (7), qualifier Pere Riba outlasted fellow Spaniard and eighth-seeded Albert Montanes 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (4), and Andreas Seppi of Italy defeated Michael Berrer of Germany 6-2, 7-6 (4).
Wild card Julian Reister of Germany beat 12th-seeded Victor Hanescu of Romania, 7-6 (4), 6-4 and Jeremy Chardy of France defeated 13th-seeded German and Wimbledon doubles champion Philipp Petzschner 6-3, 6-3.
Bacsinszky reaches quarters
Second-seeded Timea Bacsinszky rallied to beat Belarus qualifier Ekaterina Dzehalevich 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 to reach the Gastein Ladies quarterfinals at Bad Gastein, Austria, Wednesday.
Bacsinszky will play Sandra Zahlavova for a place in the semifinals. The Czech defeated Ukrainian qualifier Lesya Tsurenko 6-2, 6-4.
Ginepri wins
Robby Ginepri posted a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 hometown debut win Tuesday, defeating Australian qualifier Nick Lindahl to book into the second round of the Atlanta Tennis Championships.
Taylor Dent and Donald Young also produced American wins, with Dent, 29, showing signs of recovery two years after returning following back surgery. Dent added to the continuing misery for former top ten player James Blake 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
The 20-year-old Young defeated of Israeli Dudi Sela 7-5, 6-0. Belgian Xavier Malisse defeated American Ryan Sweeting 7-6 (7-1), 6-3. South African Kevin Anderson upset Serb Janko Tipsarevic, seeded fifth, 6-3, 7-5.
Jankovic in 2nd round
Top-seeded Jelena Jankovic beat Bojana Jovanovski 6-3, 6-3 Tuesday in an all-Serbian match in the first round at the Slovenia Open.
Jankovic will face Belarus qualifier Anastasiya Yakimova, who rallied to defeat Masa Zec Peskaric of Slovenia 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Stefanie Voegele upset second-seeded Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic 7-5, 6-2.
Eighth-seeded Sofia Arvidsson was also beaten in an upset, losing 7-6 (1), 6-2 to Johanna Larsson in an all-Swedish match. While Ksenia Pervak of Russia knocked out fifith-seeded Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia 6-1, 6-3.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia, Sara Errani of Italy and Polona Hercog of Slovenia all advanced to the second round.
Pavlyuchenkova defeated Alberta Brianti of Italy 7-5, 6-1, Errani downed Anna Tatishvili of Georgia 7-6 (1), 6-4 and Hercog beat Russian qualifier Elena Bovina 6-3, 6-3.
Errani upset
Fourth-seeded Sara Errani was upset in straight sets by Anna Chakvetadze of Russia in the second round of the Slovenia Open Wednesday.
Chakvetadze eased to a 6-1, 6-2 win against the Italian and will face in the quarterfinals compatriot Vera Dushevina, who rallied to beat Virginie Razzano of France 4-6, 7-5, 6
