King Faisal Specialist Hospital here has set up a committee to investigate the death of a Saudi woman during a kidney transplant. Relatives of 20-year-old victim say that a doctor's assistant failed to secure a tube 18 times during the surgical procedure, causing an air bubble to develop in her veins leading to a stroke and eventually death. An uncle of the deceased has called for the medic responsible to be punished for the error, as well as the authorities that granted him a license to practice. “They need to lay down strict disciplinary measures for people working in medicine, and particularly those who've qualified through private institutions,” the uncle said. The hospital said the complaint had been received and that an investigation committee was studying the details. “The committee's report will be presented to the Shariah Health Commission,” the hospital said, referring to the judicial body responsible for investigating medical cases.
