Sharapova earns quarterfinal berth

seeded Maria Sharapova cruised into the quarterfinals of the Strasbourg International with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Bulgarian qualifier Dia Evtimova Wednesday.
She next faces Julia Goerges of Germany, who defeated Sybille Bammer of Austria 6-1, 7-6 (6).
Vania King of the US broke local hope Alize Cornet five times and won 6-3, 6-2. King will next face Anastasia Rodionova of Australia, who went through after Elena Baltacha of Britain retired with a lower back injury while leading 2-1 in the first set.
Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain also advanced, taking advantage of Lucie Hradecka's retirement. Kristina Barrois of Germany defeated Yvonne Meusburger of Austria 7-5, 6-3.
Rochus stuns Soderling

US beats Spain

Pironkova ousts Dementieva
Top-five player Elena Dementieva was upset at the Warsaw Open by Bulgarian qualifier Tsvetana Pironkova 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 Wednesday.
Pironkova, ranked 100, will play Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania who defeated Timea Bacsinsky of Switzerland 6-2, 6-4.
In other second-round games, Li Na of China beat Katarzyna Piter of Poland 6-0, 6-3, and Zheng Jie of China beat Tathiana Garbin of Italy 6-1, 6-1.
Sixth-seeded Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine won over Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic 6-2, 6-4, while Greta Arn of Hungary defeated Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic, 6-4, 6-4.
