Inter misses chance to stretch lead
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 08 - 03 - 2010

Inter Milan was held to a goalless draw at home to Genoa Sunday, but stayed four points clear at the top of the Serie A.
Jose Mourinho's side dominated the match, but was often let down by wayward shooting or a poor final ball that allowed Genoa's defense time to clear and reorganize.
Inter remains top with 59 points, four ahead of AC Milan and seven of AS Roma in third. Milan drew 0-0 with Roma Saturday.
Elsewhere Fabio Miccoli scored nine minutes from time to give Palermo a 1-0 win at Livorno that takes the Sicilian club into the Champions League qualification places.
Palermo had struggled to find a breakthrough and Livorno goalkeeper Rubinho made a number of saves to thwart the team he left in the January transfer window. Palermo is fourth on 46 and is two points clear of Juventus in fifth.
At the San Siro, it took until the 40th minute for there to be a meaningful shot, with Genoa keeper Marco Amelia holding on to Dejan Stankovic's long range effort. Sokratis Papastathopoulos tried lobbing Inter keeper Julio Cesar in the 55th minute, but his shot went high.
Genoa was content to defend and limited Inter to hopeful shots. Mario Balotelli, Maicon, Samuel Eto'o and Wesley Sneijder all tried their luck from the edge of the area, but failed to trouble Amelia.
Palermo needed a shot from the edge of the area to finally find a way past Rubinho. Earlier Rubinho had twice denied Miccoli and after halftime blocked efforts from Javier Pastore and Edinson Cavani.
Napoli slipped to seventh after losing 2-1 away to Bologna.
Also Sunday, it was; Atalanta 0, Udinese 0; Bari 1, Chievo Verona 0; Cagliari 2, Catania 2; Sampdoria 2, Lazio 1; Siena 1, Parma 1.
Atletico 1, Zaragoza 1
In Madrid, substitute Ibrahima Balde scored an injury-time equalizer as 10-man Atletico Madrid drew 1-1 with Zaragoza Sunday in the Spanish league.
Jiri Jarosik rose to head in Gabriel Fernandez's corner kick in the sixth minute for Zaragoza and Balde headed in a Jose Manuel Jurado cross in the dying seconds to level the score.
Jose Antonio Reyes was sent off 20 minutes from the end for retaliating after Eliseu had grabbed his shirt, one of many refereeing decisions that angered the visitors. The result leaves Atletico 10th on 31 points and Zaragoza 17th on 25 points.
Jeronimo “Momo” Figueroa earlier scored twice as Xerez beat Malaga 4-2 in a match which both sides finished with 10 men, while Gaizka Toquero scored both goals in Athletic Bilbao's 2-0 win against Valladolid. Xerez stays bottom of the league on 15 points and Malaga is 15th on 27 points.
In other games, Espanyol drew 0-0 with Villarreal, Mallorca beat Sporting Gijon 3-0 and Osasuna drew 0-0 with Getafe.
On Saturday, Real Madrid went top of the standings by beating Sevilla 3-2 with an injury-time goal.
