German rivals Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen advanced into the UEFA Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday. Munich lost 2-1 to visiting Anderlecht but moved past the 1983 winner thanks to last week's 5-0 first-leg victory, while Leverkusen survived a 3-2 loss at Bundesliga rival Hamburger SV to go through on away goals. The German pair will be joined in Friday's draw for the next round by Zenit St. Petersburg, which beat Marseille 2-0, PSV Eindhoven, Everton and Getafe. Tottenham coach Juande Ramos' attempt at winning European club soccer's second-tier tournament for an unprecedented third straight season was ended when PSV beat Spurs in a penalty shootout. Four-time European champion Bayern was effectively through before taking to the field at the Allianz Arena and moved further ahead in the ninth minute when defender Lucio headed a free kick past the goalkeeper. Serhat Akin beat the offside trap and put a low shot past Bayern's reserve goalkeeper Michael Rensing for Anderlecht in the 20th, and Oleksandr Yakovenko made it 2-1 in the 35th after a mistake by defender Philipp Lahm. However, Bayern still sailed through easily. Leverkusen held a 1-0 advantage from the first leg and twice led on Wednesday. Sergei Barbarez scored in the 18th before Hamburg's Piotr Trochowski equalized in the 53rd. Fanis Gekas put the visitors back ahead two minutes later with a low shot to the far post but his team had a late scare when Paolo Guerrero made it 2-2 and then crossed to Rafael van der Vaart for a sidefooted goal with 10 minutes left. Leverkusen's 23-year-old goalkeeper Rene Adler saved his team several times, stopping first-half chances by Guerreo, Ivica Olic and Van der Vaart. Tottenham and Everton both overcame first-leg deficits to force extra time before losing in penalty shootouts. Spurs trailed 1-0 going into the game at PSV's Philips Stadium and looked to be heading out until Dimitar Berbatov volleyed an 81st-minute cross by Pascal Chimbonda from the edge of the box past Brazilian goalkeeper Gomes. PSV was leading 6-5 in the shootout when Chimbonda put Tottenham's seventh kick wide of the post. Everton rallied to 2-2 on aggregate against Fiorentina with goals by Andrew Johnson and Mikel Arteta, but Aiyegbeni Yakubu missed in the shootout and visiting goalkeeper Sebastian Frey then saved from Phil Jagielka to send the Italian side through 4-2 on penalties. Juan Angel Albin scored with a chip in the 78th minute to lead Getafe 1-0 over Benfica and through 3-1 on aggregate. Albin dodged Konstantinos Katsouranis before curling over goalkeeper Quim with his left foot. Getafe remained unbeaten in 10 and handed Benfica coach Fernando Chalana - who replaced Jose Antonio Comacho after his resignation Sunday - a loss in his debut. Five opposing managers - including Camacho and Tottenham's Martin Jol - have resigned or been fired as the Spanish club swept through its first European campaign.Canada holds Mexico In California, Luis Angel Landin converted a penalty kick in the 22nd minute to give Mexico a 1-1 draw with Canada in Group B of CONCACAF men's Olympic qualifying Wednesday. The game was the second of a doubleheader. Guatemala defeated Haiti 1-0 in the first game on Marvin Avila's goal in the 27th minute. Guatemala has three points to lead Group B, while Canada and Mexico share second place with one point each. The top two finishers in each four-team group will advance to the March 20 semifinals at Nashville, Tennessee. __
