Authorities are investigating a man who has been held for three months by Jeddah Passports Deportation Department and claims that he is a Saudi. Mukhtar Marjea was detained after being found with no identification documents but refused deportation on the grounds that paperwork to obtain Saudi nationality was currently in the hands of Jeddah's Civil Affairs Department. Official court documents purportedly supporting Marjea's claims failed to convince Passport Department officials that he and his 18-year-old brother could legally claim nationality as the sons of a Saudi father and Nigerian mother. The Commission for Investigation and Prosecution is looking into the case after being approached by the National Society for Human Rights in Makkah.
