Defending champion Shakhtar Donetsk romped to a 4-0 victory over Toulouse and Benfica hit three goals in six minutes in thumping Everton 5-0 in the Europa League Thursday.
Luis Fernandinho scored twice as Shakhtar made it three wins in three Group J games against the struggling French club, and Luiz Adriano and Tomas Hubschman added further goals for the Ukrainian side in Donetsk.
Fernandinho scored from the penalty spot in the eighth minute after Dany Nounkeu handled. Adriano collected a long pass from Jadson to fire the second in the 24th and Tomas Hubschman drove home Razvan Rat's cross in the 39th to give Shakhtar a 3-0 halftime lead. Adriano backheeled a cross into the net for the fourth in the 56th.
While Shakhtar has nine points from three games, Brugge drew level on four points with Toulouse with a 2-0 win over Partizan Belgrade thanks to two goals by Croatian striker Ivan Perisic, who also missed a penalty. Partizan has lost all three games.
Javier Saviola and Oscar Cardosa scored twice each as Benfica outplayed injury-hit Everton in Lisbon. Luisao headed in the fourth to end a spell of three goals in six minutes just after halftime. The victory put Benfica atop Group I although level on six points with Everton, which hopes to reverse the result when they meet again in Liverpool in two weeks.
BATE Borisov came from behind to beat AEK Athens 2-1, leaving both teams with three points in the chase behind Benfica and Everton.
Two goals by Alex Frei put Basel on top of Group E with a 2-0 win at CSKA Sofia after Roma captured a 1-1 draw at Fulham thanks to a goal in the third minute of injury time by Marco Andreolli. Basel was on top with six points, followed by Fulham with five and Roma four.
After a 5-0 home loss to Inter Milan in Serie A, Genoa tumbled 3-0 at Lille in Group B. Lille is on top with seven points. Valencia has five after a 1-1 draw with Slavia Prague and third-place Genoa has three.
Hapoel Tel Aviv crushed Rapid Vienna 5-1 and is neck-and-neck with Hamburg at the top of Group C, the German club adding to Celtic's woes with a 1-0 victory in Glasgow thanks to Marcus Berg's second-half goal.
Shabani Nonda scored twice as Galatasaray stayed atop Group F with a 4-1 victory over Dynamo Bucharest. A second-half penalty by Dimitris Salpingidis enabled Panathinaikos to stay a point behind after a 1-0 victory over Sturm Graz.
A second-minute penalty by Luis Suarez put Ajax on course to a 2-1 Group A victory over Dynamo Zagreb to put the Dutch level on points with Anderlecht, which was held to 0-0 by Romania's Politehnica Timisoara. Joao Moutinho's 85th-minute winner kept Sporting Lisbon well clear at the top of Group D after a 2-1 victory at Ventspils. There was more gloom for Hertha Berlin with a 1-0 defeat at home to Hereenveen to stay last with one point. Hertha is also last in the Bundesliga after eight straight losses.
Last season's UEFA Cup runner-up Werder Bremen squandered a two-goal lead and was held to 2-2 by Austria Vienna in Group L. Bremen still stays on top of the group with seven points. But Athletic Bilbao moved within a point with a 2-1 victory over Portugal's Nacional.
Lazio captain Tomasso Rocchi scored an injury-time winner in a 2-1 victory over Villarreal in Group G. But the Italian club stayed three points behind Salzburg, which made it three wins in three games with a 1-0 victory over Levski Sofia.
PSV Eindhoven stayed on top of Group K with a 1-0 victory at home to FC Copenhagen. Sparta Prague moved from fourth to second with a 2-0 victory over CFR Cluj. Fenerbahce went top of Group H after Kazim Kazim's 59th-minute winner in a 1-0 victory at Steaua Bucharest and FC Sheriff's surprise 2-0 victory over FC Twente. Fenerbahce has six points, Twente and Sheriff have four, and Steaua two.
