The Mayor's Office has said that mosquito-combating teams have tackled 29,974 sites where the dengue-carrying insect proliferates, and filled in 70 locations housing stagnant water. Abdulghaffar Azhari, head of Pest Control and Preventive Health, said Tuesday that between June and August insecticide spray had been applied at 20,822 buildings under-construction, 540 nurseries, 384 farms, 1,884 parks, 1,024 stagnant pools, 612 brick factories and 561 sewage tanks, 519 schools, 467 private houses and 1,130 mosques. Azhari said that the number of mosquitoes, particularly fever-bearing ones, had declined considerably in Jeddah since the introduction of plans. The insecticides used are conform to World Health Organization and official Saudi specifications and are only applied by trained officials, Azhari said.
