Jeff outpitches little brother Jered for win
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 22 - 06 - 2009

Jeff Weaver outpitched his little brother Jered as the majors-leading Los Angeles Dodgers beat the crosstown L.A. Angels 6-4 in Interleague play on Saturday.
It was the first time in seven years that brothers had started against each other in the majors, but it did not quite live up to its occasions, with neither lasting six innings.
Jeff Weaver pitched five-plus innings and gave up two runs, while Jered Weaver had a rougher time. He went 5 1-3 innings and was tagged for six runs, including a home run by Russell Martin.
Tigers 9, Brewers 5: In Detroit, pitcher Alfredo Figaro won his major-league debut, guiding Detroit over Milwaukee.
Miguel Cabrera and Placido Polanco homered and Cabrera was one of four Tigers to finish with three hits among a team total of 17. Seven players finished with RBIs.
Detroit opened a three-game lead atop the American League Central division standings while Milwaukee ceded leadership of the National League Central to St. Louis.
Giants 2, Rangers 1, 11 innings: In San Francisco, Nate Schierholtz scored the winning run on a wild pitch with two outs in the 11th inning, as San Francisco scraped home over Texas.
Schierholtz, who entered in a double-switch in the top half, doubled off Texas pitcher Jason Jennings to start the inning. Two outs later, and following an intentional walk, Bengie Molina swung at a wild pitch that bounced in the dirt, came up and hit the catcher and bounced toward the Giants' dugout.
Red Sox 3, Braves 0: In Boston, pitcher Josh Beckett allowed just five singles for his first shutout since joining Boston, in the win over Atlanta.
Beckett rebounded from giving up a season-high 11 hits in his previous start for his first complete game of the year.
He struck out seven and walked none.
Boston catcher Jason Varitek doubled twice and scored twice, helping spoil the homecoming of Red Sox pitcher Derek Lowe, who recorded the loss for the Braves.
Marlins 2, Yankees 1: In Miami, Josh Johnson pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, steering Florida past New York.
In other games it was: Rays 3, Mets 1; Cardinals 7, Royals 1; Orioles 6, Phillies 5; White Sox 10, Reds 8; Rockies 9, Pirates 7; Astros 6, Twins 5; Mariners 7, Diamondbacks 3; Cubs 6, Indians 5, 13 innings; Athletics 6, Padres 3; Nationals 5, Blue Jays 3, 12 innings.
