A collection of the best Urdu poems written about mothers has been compiled by the Jeddah-based journalist Shahid Naeem, a correspondent of Pakistan's Geo TV. “Through this book, I have portrayed my feelings and thoughts about my mother, and the special relationship between her and my heart,” remarked Shahid, in a conversation with Saudi Gazette. “Nobody can deny that they love their mother; she is special for everyone, whether a small baby or an adult.” “For me, she is a special person who can keep love and humility alive even through difficult times,” he added. The book - “O, Mother” - was launched recently at a local restaurant in Jeddah, and includes most of the great Urdu poets of all time, such as Bilraj Komal, Nada Fazli, Dr. Abdul Mannan Tarzi, Jamil AzimabadI, Mushtaq Shabnum and Dr. Manazur Ashiq, amongst others. The poems featured in the book are a tribute to motherhood and the sacrifices mothers make in their life for the sake of their children. The poets describe a mother's soul so beautifully, that it gives voice to every reader's heart and the gratitude and sense of belonging one feels for mothers in general. Shahid has already published such compilations before, and on the same subject, and claims that it is the sheer abundance of material available on the subject that makes compilations so necessary. He has also compiled a collection of the ‘best' ghazals: “Jalturang”, “Tarseel”, “Bisat”, “Aiwan”, with the aim of drawing out instances of the emotional pain people experience and presenting it to reader. “I will continue this (kind of) work so that the research and thinking of these scholars, thinkers and philosophers can be gathered on one platform and presented as a gift for the coming generations,” he said.
