In a battle between two tail-enders, the Coca-Cola Tigers got the better of the Barako Bull, beating the Energy Boosters, 120-106, Sunday night in the 2009 Motolite PBA Fiesta Conference.
In the second match, the Burger King Whoppers whipped the Alaska Aces, 106-88, to tie idle Rain or Shine at fourth place in the standings with their sixth win in 11 games. Alaska suffered its seventh loss in 11 games, staying at eighth spot.
The Tigers notched only their third win in nine games to stay a rung higher than the bottom-dwelling E-Boosters who absorbed their fifth straight defeat and dropped to a 2-9 win-loss overall.
It was a repeat win for Coca-Cola against Barako Bull which the Tigers also defeated 106-103 during their first meeting in the conference.
The E-Boosters showed up with a new import in Daryan Selvy who carried the brunt of the scoring load for his team, scoring 30 points and grabbing 13 rebounds in 37 minutes of action.
The Barako Bull raced to a 45-29 lead in the second quarter as Selvy took advantage of his defenders' unfamiliarity to his moves to score a string of baskets.
Carlo Sharma also waxed hot from the field, knocking in 20 points.
But as the second half opened, the Tigers began roaring back. They unleashed a 17-2 run in the fourth quarter to pad a precarious 97-93 lead to 114-95, with 2:45 left in the game.
The Tigers held the E-Boosters scoreless for more than four minutes in that period.
The Barako Bull's woes were compounded when Selvy experienced cramps at the final 3:11 mark and had to be benched for good.
Import James Penny and Asi Taulava led the Tigers on both offense and defense as the two combined for 59 points and 18 rebounds.
Penny and Taulava were at their hottest during the final quarter as they led the Coca-Cola blitz.
Penny led all scorers with 36 points. He also had eight rebounds.
Taulava finished with 23 points and 10 boards.
The two combined for 17 of Coca
