To celebrate Global Earth Day on April 22, the Meteorology and Environmental Protection Department here is planning to organize a four-day conference from April 19-22 at the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce under the patronage of Prince Turki Bin Naser, President of the Meteorology and Environmental Protection Department and President of the Saudi Environmental Society. Dr. Ibrahim Abdulhamid Alim, secretary general of the World Environmental Society of Saudi Arabia, said that the society has planned a number of different events for the four-day conference which will involve university and school students, associations and volunteers in the campaign to preserve the environment. “On the fourth day of the event, there will be lectures on solid and liquid waste in addition to the presentation of the work and activities that have been carried out in the campaign,” he said. The environmental society with the cooperation of the US Consulate will organize several artistic and literary competitions on Earth Day with the aim of involving all members and segments of society, schools, universities, public and private sectors, associations, centers for orphans and people with special needs. The idea is to provide an opportunity for everyone to become involved in the business and scientific programs of the society, said Dr. Amal Saeed Najjar, executive director and general coordinator of the environmental society. “The competition includes contests for the best environmental design, the best essay or story or poem that is about reducing solid waste or about making society free of plastic,” she said. “There will also be an award for the best photograph showing environmental irregularities and for planting trees. The last date for joining the competition is April 10, and the environmental committee will select the winners,” she said. Dr. Alim thanked Crown Prince Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense and Aviation, and Inspector General for his continued support for the awareness and protection of the environment.
