A man who proffered his 20-year-old daughter as collateral for a SR50,000 loan from a man in his fifties has failed to repay the money by the agreed deadline and married his daughter off to the quinquagenarian without her knowledge. The daughter was taken aback by her out-of-the-blue husband's demand to go to his house where his three other wives reside, while her father told her he feared he would be poisoned if she did not comply. “I dreamt, just like any other girl, of a husband and family but I never expected to be married in this way. I don't have to accept the marriage, but my father is asking me to, otherwise he'll go to jail, leaving me in a nightmare position,” the daughter said. Sheikh Ibrahim Al-Khodhairi, a Cassation Court judge, said, “The law can bring justice to the girl, because she cannot be married without her consent.” The National Society for Human Rights has started to look into the case. “There are many infractions involved in this case, such as not getting the girl's consent and not having carried out the premarital test,” Ma'atooq Al-Shareef, a NSHR member, said.
