Bruins back on top in NHL
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 02 - 02 - 2009

The Boston Bruins moved back to the top of the overall NHL standings by edging the New York Rangers 1-0 on Saturday.
Goalie Tuukka Rask made 35 saves for his first NHL shutout in his first game since 2007, and Boston leapfrogged San Jose for the league's best record.
Marc Savard deflected a slap shot out of the air with 22 seconds left in the second period. Rask made 15 saves in the third period.
Blackhawks 4, Sharks 2: In San Jose, California, Chicago notched its first victory over San Jose in nearly six years.
Jonathan Toews scored twice and ended Sharks goalie Evgeni Nabokov's franchise record shutout streak at 170 minutes and 58 seconds.
It was only the second home loss for San Jose in 27 games.
Capitals 4, Red Wings 2: In Washington, defending champs Detroit slumped to their fifth straight defeat, beaten by Washington.
Alex Ovechkin broke a third-period tie in spectacular style. He appeared to have overskated a feed along the left wing, but reached behind, put the puck through his legs and used a defenseman as a shield before pushing a low shot past the Red Wings goalie with seven minutes remaining.
Ovechkin then scored on the power play for his NHL-leading 33rd goal less than two minutes later.
Sabres 2, Coyotes 0: In Glendale, Arizona, Ryan Miller made 28 saves for his fourth shutout of the season, helping Buffalo down Phoenix.
The Coyotes have lost three straight and haven't scored in 142 minutes.
Canadiens 4, Kings 3: In Montreal, the home team had to wait to the last minute to beat Los Angeles and end its season-high losing streak at four games.
Saku Koivu scored on a power-play goal with 22 seconds remaining to secure the win.
Stars 7, Blue Jackets 3: In Columbus, Ohio, Dallas notched a fourth straight win, crushing Columbus.
James Neal had two goals and an assist, and Marty Turco made 35 saves for the Stars.
Blues 4, Flyers 0: In St. Louis, Chris Mason made 35 saves for his 15th career shutout and second in three games, as St. Louis cruised past Philadelphia.
Mason also had an assist, while Carlo Colaiacovo scored his second goal for St. Louis.
The Flyers were 0-for-11 on the power play.
Wild 4, Canucks 3, OT: In Vancouver, British Columbia, Marc-Andre Bergeron scored his second goal on a power play two minutes into overtime, giving Minnesota a tight victory over Vancouver.
Vancouver's Ryan Kesler scored his second goal on a power play with 15 seconds left in regulation and the goalie pulled, forcing overtime. But Bergeron one-timed a shot that deflected off a Canucks player and into the net.
The Canucks have lost eight straight to plummet to 11th place in the Western Conference.
Ducks 4, Avalanche 3: In Denver, Colorado slid to its fourth straight loss, beaten by Anaheim.
Teemu Selanne broke a tie early in the third period to give the Ducks victory.
Maple Leafs 5, Penguins 4: In Toronto, Jason Blake beat Mathieu Garon with a wrist shot with ten minutes left and Toronto held on to beat Pittsburgh.
Hurricanes 2, Thrashers 0: In Raleigh, North Carolina, Cam Ward made 19 saves for his third shutout of the season as Carolina downed Atlanta.
Islanders 3, Panthers 1: In Uniondale, New York, Yann Danis made 37 saves to lead New York to its third straight victory, seeing off Florida.
Danis only conceded with 87 seconds left.
