MAKKAH — The municipality has stepped up efforts to keep the holy city and other holy sites clean during Haj. “Our municipality has applied for the first time new technologies that would have a big impact in improving cleaning services,” the director general of cleaning at the municipality, Mohammed Bin Abdul Rahman Al-Mouraqi, said. Mayor Osama Al-Bar and his deputy, Abdussalam Mushat, are making Makkah's cleanliness a priority, he said. The municipality has imported and installed 48 new containers for garbage storage, each with a 3,000 liter capacity, for use during the Haj season. These cylinders are used to temporarily store garbage, can be unloaded easily, and help prevent environmental pollution and garbage fires. “They do not need any electricity and thus will ensure nonstop operation — a good portion of the container is hidden inside the earth,” The assistant director general of cleaning, Mahmoud Saati, said. “We have also constructed three storage wells with a capacity of 60 cubic meters each with the support of a specialized company to store waste,” Al-Mouraqi said. “We have implemented the new projects after conducting enough studies.”
