Saudi Gazette report RIYADH — As many as 855 people died last year as a result of work injuries, according to the General Organization for Social Insurance (GOSI). An annual statistical report released by GOSI said 6,351 were crippled by work injuries during the same year. The Eastern Province had the lion's share of work-related accidents with 238 deaths, followed by Riyadh where 207 people died of workplace injuries, Al-Hayat newspaper reported on Wednesday, citing GOSI statistics. According to the report, there were 121 deaths in Makkah, 60 in Asir, 37 in Qassim, 22 in Hail, 11 in Al-Jouf and 9 in Al-Baha. According to the report, Makkah topped the other towns and cities in the number of the incapacitating injuries. It said 2,553 people in Makkah Province became invalid as a result of serious injuries they had sustained at work. Riyadh came second with 1,411 cases, the Eastern Province third with 979 followed by Asir with 403 cases. Al-Baha and the Northern Borders Province came last in the list of injuries. The former registered only six cases and the latter 10. The report said compensations were paid to 13,970 people who had lost their relatives to workplace accidents. A total of SR4.97 million was paid to 1,891 male and female beneficiaries in the Eastern Province. A similar sum was distributed among 2,229 beneficiaries in Riyadh.
