Lepchenko bundles out Wozniacki at Stanford
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 08 - 08 - 2015

STANFORD, Calif. — American Varvara Lepchenko beat top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 6-2 in the second round of the Bank of the West Classic Thursday.
“It was kind of surprising,” Lepchenko said. “The first match helped coming into this match. I felt the ball wasn't coming at me as fast.
My first match, it really seemed to be coming fast.” The 60th-ranked Lepchenko reached the quarterfinals after failing to get out of the first round in her last seven events.
She beat a top-20 opponent for the first time this year and knocked off a top-five opponent for the third time in her career.
Lepchenko will face Germany's Mona Barthel on Friday in the quarterfinals at The Taube Family Tennis Center. Barthel advanced Wednesday with a victory over sixth-seeded Andrea Petkovic.
Earlier, second-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland beat Japanese qualifier Misaki Doi 1-6, 6-2, 6-0 to set up a match against fifth-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany.
Kerber, a finalist at Stanford last year, beat Ana Konjuh of Croatia 6-3, 6-4. Fourth-seeded Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic topped Japanese qualifier Kimiko Date-Krumm, at 44 the oldest player on the tour, 7-5, 6-2.
Pliskova will face Croatia's Ajla Tomljanovic. In the other quarterfinal, American Alison Riske will play eighth-seeded Elina Svitolina of Ukraine.
Mathieu in final
French qualifier Paul-Henri Mathieu defeated Nicolas Almagro of Spain 6-4, 6-3 at the Generali Open on Friday to reach his first ATP final in six years.
Looking for his fifth career title, Mathieu will play top-seeded Dominic Thiem of Austria or Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany in Saturday's final.
Mathieu advanced to his first semifinal of the year by beating Federico Delbonis of Argentina 6-3, 0-6, 6-3, while Almagro defeated Dusan Lajovic of Serbia 6-3, 6-4.
Thiem led 7-6 (3), 3-2 when Montanes, who received medical treatment on his left ankle in the opening set, quit the quarterfinal, while Kohlschreiber defeated the third-seeded Fabio Fognini of Italy 7-6 (0), 6-4 .
Nishikori, Cilic in quarters
Reigning US Open champion Marin Cilic and 2014 US Open runner-up Kei Nishikori advanced to the quarterfinals of the ATP and WTA Washington Open with straight-set triumphs Thursday.
Japanese second seed Nishikori never faced a break point in dispatching Argentina's Leonardo Mayer 6-4, 6-4, after 92 minutes.
The 25-year-old Asian number one will next face Australia's Sam Groth, who fired 20 aces to defeat Spanish seventh seed Feliciano Lopez 6-3, 6-4 in 59 minutes.
Croatian third seed Cilic, who faced a possible rematch with Nishikori in the semifinals, outfought 32nd-ranked American Sam Querrey 7-6 (7/2), 7-6 (7/3) at the US Open hardcourt warm-up event.
French fourth seed Richard Gasquet, coming off a Wimbledon semi-final run, was upset by 37th-ranked American Jack Sock 6-7 (4/7), 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 after two hours and 33 minutes.
Blocking Cilic's path to his second semifinal of the year is Alexander Zverev, who rallied past Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Next up for Sock is 55th-ranked countryman Steve Johnson, who dumped Bulgarian sixth seed Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.
Russian giant killer Teymuraz Gabashville was eliminated 7-5, 6-4 by Lithuania's Ricardas Berankis, who will next meet John Isner, the US eighth seed who defeated Canada's Vasek Pospisil 6-4, 7-6 (8/6).
Women's top seed Ekaterina Makarova of Russia also reached the last eight, defeating Britain's Naomi Broady 6-4, 7-6 (7/2). She next plays Romanian sixth seed Irina-Camelia Begu.
Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia eliminated third-seeded Belinda Bencic of Switzerland 6-2, 6-4 to reach quarterfinals. She will face Christina McHale of the United States for a semifinal berth.
McHale, who is No. 62 in the WTA rankings, advanced by edging Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan 6-2, 1-6, 7-5. — Agencies
