Amid social media backlash, Pakistani singer Komal Rizvi defends controversial hospital bed selfie
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 08 - 07 - 2015

KARACHI - There's a time and place for everything, even selfies. At least, that's what people are saying after famous Pakistani pop singer Komal Rizvi visited Abdul Sattar Edhi and took a selfie with the philanthropist, who is seriously ill and under treatment in a hospital, dawn.com reported.
The singer visited Edhi and his wife Bilquis on Sunday, and posted pictures of her trip on her Facebook page, saying: “I cannot thank Almighty enough for giving me this unforgettable moment and opportunity to meet the most important man in Pakistan. The man and his beautiful wife, whose enormous and endless wealth and prosperity cannot be measured by mere dollars.”
The selfies showing Komal smiling at the camera with a clearly distressed and unwell Edhi lying on the hospital bed has led to netizens lashing out at the singer on social media despite her attempts to defend her action.
Many felt that while it was laudable that Komal was in the forefront of charitable causes this Ramadan, her selfie with the sick Edhi was something which had gone too far. Social media users took to Twitter to criticize the singer's now infamous selfie.
@desijalebi wrote: “Apparently #KomalRizvi decided it was more important to take a selfie with Edhi saab than to pray for his health.”
While @Hamzamir16Mir said: “Oh both your kidneys have failed? That's sad. But wait, first let me take a selfie” #KomalRizvi #Shame #Sarcastic A defiant Komal reposted the photos, saying “because I don't think anyone else in pakistan has a greater selfie than this.” “Both Edhi Sahab and I were happy taking it. We were laughing and joking and singing and talking about other celebrity visits and how i can possibly participate in the future with their foundation.
“I am ALSO EXTREMELY disappointed with how nasty, negative, and lazy and hypocritical some people in Pakistan are. To take such an innocent and beautiful thing and turn it into something ugly,” she wrote.
Apart from her selfie with Edhi, Komal was also pictured with his wife. Komal isn't the only celebrity to have visited Edhi and Edhi Center recently. Other celebrities have taken the trip too, like the cast of upcoming film “Wrong No,” including Danish Taimoor, Sohai Ali Abro and Yasir Nawaz, who posted pictures of their visit on Facebook.
Fans and commentators didn't judge the cast of “Wrong No” as harshly as they did Komal. Most of the comments following the post were positive and congratulatory. Only a few people criticised the trip, asking: “It was a great thing they did but why publicise it so much?” - Agencies
