Pineda strikes out 16 as Yankees beat Orioles
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 12 - 05 - 2015

NEW YORK — Right-hander Michael Pineda struck out a career-high 16 hitters over seven dominant innings and the New York Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-2 Sunday.
Pineda (5-0) came within two strikeouts of the team record set by left-hander Ron Guidry in 1978, as he confounded Baltimore hitters with a mix of fastballs and sliders. He allowed one run and six hits and might have had a chance at tying Guidry but was at 111 pitches through seven.
Mets 7, Phillies 4: Bartolo Colon became the major league leader in wins as the New York Mets continued their recent run of success against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Colon, who turns 42 this month, improved to 6-1 by going six-plus innings, giving up four runs on eight hits while striking out six and walking none as the Mets (20-11) posted their sixth straight series win against their National League East rival.
Mariners 4, Athletics 3: Felix Hernandez gave up two home runs to the same player but very little else on Sunday afternoon while leading the Seattle Mariners to a win and series sweep over the Oakland A's.
Hernandez allowed five hits, two of them home runs to Oakland shortstop Marcus Semien, and two earned runs while improving to 6-0 for the first time in his 10-year career. He struck out six, including his 2,000th career strikeout.
Angels 3, Astros 1: Right-hander Garrett Richards and three relievers combined to permit only one hit as the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Houston Astros.
Richards (3-1) had a no-hitter for 6-1/3 innings, retired 17 of 18 batters between the first and sixth innings and finished with 10 strikeouts, one less than his career best. In 6-2/3 innings, the right-hander conceded just one hit, one run and four walks and hit one batter.
Indians 8, Twins 2: Right-hander Danny Salazar struck out 11 and combined with two relievers on a two-hitter and the Cleveland Indians avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of the Minnesota Twins, whose four-game winning streak ended.
Salazar (4-1) gave up a home run to second baseman Brian Dozier leading off the game, and then retired the next 21 batters in a row before being removed after the seventh inning. Salazar did not walk a batter.
Red Sox 6, Blue Jays 3: First baseman Mike Napoli and third baseman Pablo Sandoval homered, right-hander Clay Buchholz pitched into the seventh inning and the Boston Red Sox defeated the Toronto Blue Jays.
Buchholz (2-4) held the Blue Jays to seven hits, three walks and three runs in 6-1/3 innings to earn his first win since April 6, helping Boston salvage the finale of the three-game series.
Rangers 2, Rays 1: Adrian Beltre connected on his 398th career home run to lead the Texas Rangers to victory against the Tampa Bay Rays.
With his solo shot off Tampa Bay starter Jake Odorizzi in the top of the fourth inning, Beltre tied Dale Murphy for 54th on the all-time list.
Texas left-hander Wandy Rodriguez retired the first 15 batters he faced and set a franchise record of 34 in a row stretching back to his previous start.
In other games it was: Pirates 4, Cardinals 3; Nationals 5, Braves 4; White Sox 4, Reds 3; Brewers 3, Cubs 2 (11 innings); Giants 3, Marlins 2; Diamondbacks 2, Padres 1; Dodgers 9, Rockies 5; Royals 2, Tigers 1. — Reuters
