I am writing with regard to the article "The increasing number of expats is a worry for Saudi society" (May 8). Instead of talking about expats, ask why Saudis are continuing to recruit skilled and unskilled workers. If you don't want expats in your country, then simply put Saudis in all of those jobs presently filled by skilled and unskilled expats. Also, how does an expat have a negative effect on wages in the private sector? If the author chooses to make such comments, he should have research and data to back up his claims. TJ, Online response Here we go again. Another misinformed Saudi writer bashing expats for the miseries in his country. Expats did not come to Saudi Arabia on their own. They were brought in by Saudi employers because of the limited skills available in the local job market. If the author feels "threatened" by expats because they are competing with Saudis for resources and services, then, by all means, deport all the expats and let Saudis run their own country! Joey, Online response This article is completely misleading. The author is scaremongering just like the right-wing parties of Europe. Europe did not open its doors to unskilled workers. It united and is continuing to expand. This will inevitably lead to issues with healthcare (which is free in the EU). Instead of claiming that expats get free healthcare or that hospitals in Saudi Arabia are of a good standard, the author should be more objective and look for solutions rather than attempting to scare people into thinking expats are the problem.
