Canucks stop skid with 2-1 victory over Wild
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 07 - 12 - 2008

Kevin Bieksa's power-play goal and an early scuffle sparked Vancouver in the first period as goalie Cory Schneider picked up his first career victory for the Canucks in a 2-1 decision over the Minnesota Wild on a fight-filled Friday.
Vancouver's four-game losing streak ended, and Minnesota fell to 0-3 this season against its chief Northwest Division rival.
Jason Jaffray scored in the second period to give the Canucks the lead back after Mikko Koivu slammed a long rebound past Schneider just 27 seconds after the first intermission.
The Wild managed only one even-strength shot on net in the first period and committing 10 giveaways in the second period. They were outshot 31-17 for the game.
Stars 2, Avalanche 1, SO: At Dallas, Mike Modano scored in the fourth round of a shootout, and Marty Turco stopped Ryan Smyth's shot to give Dallas the win over Colorado.
Colorado's Wojtek Wolski converted in the first round, but Turco was perfect the next three rounds to end the Avalanche's unbeaten streak in shootouts at eight – the third-longest streak in the league since the tiebreaker system was implemented in 2005.
Mike Ribeiro got the Stars even in the third round of the shootout, and Modano put Dallas in front on a wrist shot into the upper right corner past Colorado goaltender Peter Budaj.
Turco came up with the save on Smyth to end it after Turco had given up the tying goal in the final minute of regulation.
Flames 4, Blues 3, OT: At St. Louis, Michael Cammalleri scored in overtime to help Calgary overcome a pair of two-shot deficits against the St. Louis.
Cammalleri took a pass from Jarome Iginla and beat Chris Mason with a wrist shot from the top of the right circle 2:21 into the extra period.
Calgary also got goals from Rene Bourque, Iginla and David Moss. Dion Phaneuf added four assists and Curtis Glencross picked up two assists. David Backes, Patrik Berglund and Brad Boyes scored for the Blues, who led 2-0 and 3-1 in the game. Carlo Colaiavoco picked up two assists. Berglund and Boyes also each had one assist.
Oilers 5, Kings 4, SO: At Los Angeles, Dustin Penner scored the tying goal with 11:37 left in the third period and Marc Pouliot and Ales Hemsky scored on backhanders in a shootout for the Oilers.
Pouliot, Andrew Cogliano and Ethan Moreau scored first-period goals for the Oilers. Former Kings goalie Mathieu Garon made 32 saves and stopped two of three shots in the shootout, improving to 11-0 in the tiebreaker since joining Edmonton as a free agent in July 2007.
Jarret Stoll and Alexander Frolov had power-play goals 3:22 apart to cap a four-goal second period by the Kings.
