RIYADH — The Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCTA) has recovered 30,000 Saudi artifacts that were previously smuggled out of the Kingdom. The SCTA also recovered 16,000 artifacts from within the Kingdom, according to a recent official report, Makkah daily said. The report said that the commission regularly coordinates with the ministries of foreign affairs and interior represented by Interpol in retrieving national antiquities that were smuggled out of the country. The SCTA was able to retrieve Al-Shuaibah Treasure (Kanz Al-Shuaibah) that was returned through diplomatic means, aside from other artifacts that were returned voluntarily. The report said that the commission formed a special committee to list the antiquities that were smuggled out of the country so they could be recovered. According to the report, the SCTA is encouraging citizens and expatriates to hand over any national artifacts they possess so they can be displayed in museums and exhibitions so as to highlight their historical value.
