Case for mass surveillance
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 17 - 01 - 2015

Saudi Gazette report

MASS surveillance has helped countries all over the world keep an eye on their populations, fight terrorism and protect vital national security interests by deploying electronic devices such as closed-circuit television cameras in key public squares.
China is one example of a country that has successfully used electronic surveillance to control its 1 billion plus population and limit crimes and misconduct.
The importance of electronic monitoring comes simultaneously with the expansion of cities and the change of conduct of citizens as well as the proliferation of certain crimes and negative practices, Al-Riyadh daily reported.
Even though Saudi Arabia has an excellent internal security force, the human element is no longer sufficient and technological support is required to keep public movement in cities under surveillance.
The installation of surveillance cameras in public places has become necessary as this will help in maintaining security and prevent crimes.
It is important that such surveillance should not impede society's right to privacy but the installation of CCTV cameras has proven to be one of the most important security tools in the advanced world.
Therefore, this matter is undoubtedly in the interest of the nation and society must accept it.
Muhammad Nasser Al-Otaibi, an employee, stressed the importance of installing surveillance cameras on all major roads and in districts and shopping malls in order to deter criminals.
He said the existence of these cameras in public places has now become a necessity.
“These cameras will help the police maintain security, put a limit to crime and monitor sensitive cases electronically.
The advantages of these cameras are that they store videographic evidence that can later be recalled in the event of a crime.
Perpetrators can then be easily identified before they strike again,” he said. Al-Otaibi believes CCTV cameras will help authorities save time and reduce crime.
“The demand for surveillance cameras in homes, stores and malls has increased in recent years and there is a need to monitor servants and workers and protect employers from thefts.
At the end of the day, all of this will result in peace of mind for citizens and expatriates,” he added.
Fawaz Al-Mutairi, another employee, agreed with Al-Otaibi and added it is important to install surveillance cameras in all districts and major squares as soon as possible.
“It has become necessary to cover the Kingdom's cities with a surveillance system that tightens security and expedites the arrest of people who commit crimes,” he said.
