Giants move closer to top
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 05 - 08 - 2014

NEW YORK — Left-hander Madison Bumgarner threw a two-hit shutout, and Hunter Pence hit two homers and collected four RBIs, as the San Francisco Giants routed the New York Mets 9-0 in here Sunday.
Catcher Buster Posey went 4-for-5 with a two-run homer and three RBIs for the Giants (60-51), who moved within 2.5 games of the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West Bumgarner improved to 13-8 on the season while the Mets (53-58) have just eight hits in the first three games of a four-game series.
Cardinals 3, Brewers 2: Dominated for six innings by Milwaukee starter Matt Garza, the St. Louis Cardinals feasted on the Brewers' relievers and made a winner of John Lackey in his first start with the club.
Lackey (12-7), who was acquired on Thursday from Boston, pitched seven innings and allowed seven hits and two runs.
Padres 4, Braves 3 (10 innings): Shortstop Everth Cabrera singled home Alexi Amarista from third with two out in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Padres a 4-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves.
The Padres' second straight, walk-off win over the Braves (58-54) gave them a sweep of the three-game series.
Nationals 4, Phillies 0: Stephen Strasburg threw seven shutout innings and the Washington Nationals scored an unearned run in the third to take the lead against Cole Hamels en route to a 4-0 victory against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Cubs 7, Dodgers 3: Chris Coghlan and Luis Valbuena homered, and the Chicago Cubs posted a 7-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Reds 7, Marlins 3: The Cincinnati Reds pounded out 15 hits and stole three bases, beating the Miami Marlins for the third time in the four-game series finale.
Diamondbacks 3, Pirates 2 (10 innings): Tuffy Gosewisch scored the winning run from third base when Pittsburgh were unable to convert what appeared to be an inning-ending double play, giving the Arizona Diamondbacks an extra-inning victory.
American League
Yankees 8, Red Sox 7: The New York Yankees came from behind three times to score an 8-7 win over arch-rivals Boston.
Left fielder Brett Gardner broke a 7-7 tie with a solo homer leading off the sixth inning, newly acquired infielder Stephen Drew drove in four runs against his old team, and recently claimed reliever Esmil Rogers tossed three innings of no-hit relief to give the Yankees the win.
Royals 4, Athletics 2: Right-hander James Shields flirted with perfection but settled for his first victory since July 7, leading the Kansas City Royals to a 4-2 win over the Oakland Athletics.
Angels 7, Rays 5: The Los Angeles Angels opened with a five-run first inning and needed every bit of it by the end, holding on to beat the Tampa Bay Rays.
Orioles 1, Mariners 0: Chris Tillman threw seven innings of four-hit ball, Nick Markakis homered and the Orioles took the three-game series against the Seattle Mariners with a 1-0 victory.
Indians 4, Rangers 3 (12 innings): Michael Brantley led off the bottom of the 12th inning with a home run as the Cleveland Indians rallied to beat the Texas Rangers.
Twins 16, White Sox 3: The Minnesota Twins exploded for 12 runs in the final two innings and finished with 23 hits in a 16-3 rout of the Chicago White Sox.
Astros 6, Blue Jays 1: Scott Feldman tossed his first complete game of the season and the Houston Astros rode a third consecutive strong start to a 6-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays and a four-game series victory.
Inter-League
Tigers 4, Rockies 0: Anibal Sanchez struck out a season high 12 batters over seven two-hit innings and Victor Martinez hit a three-run home run to power the Detroit Tigers to a 4-0 victory over the slumping and injury-hit Colorado Rockies. — Reuters
