Tanaka bottles up Brewers to move 5-0
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 11 - 05 - 2014

MILWAUKEE — Right-hander Masahiro Tanaka struck out seven and third baseman Yangervis Solarte hit a three-run homer as the New York Yankees beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-3 in an Inter-League game.
Tanaka scattered seven hits and a walk in 6-1/3 innings. He improved to 5-0 in his rookie season with the Yankees and has not lost in his past 42 regular season starts in Japan and MLB.
He allowed a leadoff walk to center fielder Carlos Gomez but retired 15 of his next 17 batters before running out of gas in the seventh.
Rangers 8, Red Sox 0: Texas pitcher Yu Darvish could not quite complete a no-hitter as the Rangers easily beat the Boston Red Sox.
Darvish will be having flashbacks of facing Boston's David Ortiz for a while.
Ortiz had the good fortune of breaking up Darvish's perfect game in the seventh with a fly ball that resulted in an error. Ortiz then poked Boston's first hit through the right side of the infield with two outs in the ninth.
It was the second straight season Darvish came within one out of a no-hitter.
White Sox 9, Diamondbacks 3: Alexei Ramirez had a grand slam during a seven-run fourth inning and Jose Abreu added a huge blast of his own as the Chicago White Sox beat the struggling Arizona Diamondbacks.
American League
Orioles 4, Astros 3: Jonathan Schoop had a two-out RBI single in the seventh to a break a 2-2 tie as the Baltimore Orioles won at home against the Houston Astros.
Baltimore starter Wei-Yin Chen (4-2), who gave up two runs in seven innings before turning the game over to the bullpen, got the win, while Tommy Hunter recorded his league-leading 11th save despite giving up a run in the ninth.
Angels 4, Blue Jays 3: Designated hitter Raul Ibanez hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning as the Los Angeles Angels won on the road and ended the Blue Jays' five-game winning streak.
In other games it was: Twins 2, Tigers 1: Indians 6, Rays 3; A's 8, Nationals 0; Royals 6, Mariners 1.
National League
Reds 4, Rockies 3: Joey Votto's home run leading off the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Cincinnati Reds to victory over the Colorado Rockies.
Third baseman Todd Frazier also hit a towering 485-foot home run over center field for the Reds.
Braves 3, Cubs 2 (10 innings): First baseman Freddie Freeman singled in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Atlanta Braves a home win over the Chicago Cubs.
Pirates 6, Cardinals 4: Neil Walker hit a go-ahead three-run home run in the seventh inning and had three hits and four RBIs to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates past the St Louis Cardinals.
Phillies 3, Mets 2 (11 innings): Marlon Byrd's RBI double in the 11th inning helped lift the Philadelphia Phillies to victory over the New York Mets.
Padres 10, Marlins 1: Struggling second baseman Jedd Gyorko drove in a career-high six runs with a two-run homer and a grand slam off Miami ace Jose Fernandez as the San Diego Padres punished the Miami Marlins.
Giants 3, Dodgers 1: Shortstop Brandon Crawford belted a two-run homer and the San Francisco Giants beat the Los Angeles Dodgers.
In an eventful game, San Francisco first baseman Brandon Belt suffered a broken left thumb when he was hit by a fastball from Dodgers starter Paul Maholm, while Los Angeles manager Don Mattingly was ejected for the 13th time in his career. — Agencies
