Texas hangs on to No. 1 with win over OSU
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 27 - 10 - 2008

Texas needed a big defensive stand to overcome a pair of late mistakes by Colt McCoy and tough out a 28-24 win over No. 7 Oklahoma State in college football on Saturday.
The Longhorns' reward is another week at No. 1 and yet another huge Big 12 South division game next weekend at No. 8 Texas Tech.
McCoy, who passed for 391 yards and two touchdowns, threw a rare interception that set up a field goal as Oklahoma State pulled within 28-24, then he fumbled on the Cowboys' 10 with just over five minutes left when undefeated Texas could have put the game away.
But the defense, pushed around by Oklahoma State's punishing rushing attack and big tight end Brandon Pettigrew all day, dominated to the end.
No. 2 Alabama 29, Tennessee 9: At Knoxville, Tennessee, John Parker Wilson passed for 188 yards and ran for a touchdown as unbeaten Alabama claimed consecutive victories over Tennessee for the first time since 1992.
Alabama outgained Tennessee 366-173, and finished with 178 yards rushing and 188 passing. Julio Jones caught six passes for 103 yards, and Wilson finished 17-for-24.
No. 3 Penn State 13, No. 10 Ohio State 6: At Columbus, Ohio, Pat Devlin came off the bench for injured starting quarterback Daryll Clark in the fourth quarter, leading two scoring drives and sneaking in for the go-ahead touchdown to give Penn State its first victory at Ohio State in 30 years.
The win put the 9-0 Nittany Lions in command in the Big Ten and severely crimped the league chances of the Buckeyes.
Penn State, with coach Joe Paterno coaching from the press box for the fourth straight game, solidified its position as a national championship contender and also erased the ugly memories of an 0-7 mark in Columbus since joining the Big Ten in 1993.
No. 4 Oklahoma 58, Kansas State 35: At Manhattan, Kansas, DeMarco Murray racked up 167 total yards and four touchdowns, and Oklahoma sustained a 21-point Kansas State rally in the highest-scoring first half in school history.
Sam Bradford added three touchdown passes in a wild first half in which the Sooners gave up a 28-7 lead before taking control with 27 consecutive points of their own. By halftime the Sooners led 58-28.
Other results: No. 5 Florida 63, Kentucky 5; No. 8 Texas Tech 63, No. 19 Kansas 21; No. 9 Georgia 52, No. 11 LSU 38; Louisville 24, No. 14 South Florida 20; No. 15 TCU 54, Wyoming 7; No. 16 Missouri 58, Colorado 0; Rutgers 54, No. 17 Pittsburgh 34; No. 18 BYU 42, UNLV 35; No. 20 Ball St. 38, E. Michigan 16; Virginia 24, No. 21 Georgia Tech 17; North Carolina 45, No. 23 Boston College 24; No. 24 Florida St 30, Virginia Tech 20; No. 25 Minnesota 17, Purdue 6.
