The sales star of Acura's constellation, this luxury seven-passenger SUV gets a total makeover. Replacing the wedgy, chiseled lines of the second-gen MDX, version three heralds the brand's new “Aero Sculpture” styling theme, which, in keeping with Acura's latest releases, is significantly toned down and softened. The MDX accounted for about one-third of Acura sales in 2012, so failure is not an option. Shared with Honda's other big SUV, the Pilot, the redesigned MDX's structure has a longer wheelbase for greater middle-seat comfort and rear-seat access. Rigidity will increase while a few pounds are shed. There also will be a front-drive version. The “Earth Dreams” 3.5-liter V-6 will feature direct injection and cylinder deactivation to deliver improved power, torque, and fuel economy. Acura's styling is shifting 180 degrees, from offensive to practically anonymous. The MDX might get lost in a field crowded with blue-chip, luxury nameplates offering more trim and powertrain choices. — SG
