MAKKAH — Residents of Makkah have asked that signs be erected so people know the location of the historic well Tuwa, which is not known to many people even though pilgrims and Umrah performers wish to visit the site. Local teacher Muhammad Abdulrahman said he first came to know about the well some 50 years ago. “The well used to be open but it has been closed for the past 15 years or so and there was also a small restaurant that sold foul (fava beans) nearby. Most of the visitors to the well are Moroccans and Africans. They drink its water or take a bath as they believe it has religious significance.” Adnan Al-Hazmi, a resident of Jarwal district, said the Tuwa well is opened for half an hour from time to time by those in charge of it. He said if signs are placed around the well's location, people will be able to reach it easily, Al-Hayat daily reported. Expatriate Iffat Al-Sayyid, who works near the well, said he does not know anything about the well except that the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed ablution with water from the well. “This is what I have heard from my Makkan friends. I think signs pointing out the exact location of the blessed well and maybe some history about it would help many people who want to visit the location,” he said. “The signboard should be large and should tell the story of the location and its significance in the Seerah (biography) of the Prophet,” he added.
