RIYADH — In an unprecedented move, the Consumer Protection Association (CPA) is planning to file consumer complaints with courts, Al-Hayat daily reported. A source in the association said complaints are usually solved amicably, but in certain situations it is necessary to take further legal action. The sources pointed out five cases have been submitted to the courts, including a malpractice case against a private sector hospital. “The CPA has received 20,000 complaints and 70 percent were solved amicably, 20 percent are under review and 10 percent were referred to other concerned bodies,” the source said. The CPA has also begun receiving complaints from smokers and plans to file lawsuits against tobacco companies, the source said. In addition, the association has also begun receiving complaints of medical malpractice.
