The National Human Rights Association (NHRA) has advised a Canadian woman who has sought help from its Eastern Province branch, last week, to go to court to win custody of her two children aged one and five. The Canadian woman is Muslim and her marriage contract is based on the Islamic Shariah. “Since we came to the Kingdom, I realized my husband is giving in to whatever his family dictates to him. We are having major problems and I can't stand life with him anymore,” she told the Arabic daily Al-Riyadh. The husband, who had previously agreed to allow her to stay in the Kingdom with her children in statements to Al-Riyadh, said his income is insufficient to rent a separate apartment. The husband did not show up at the meeting scheduled by the NHRA to discuss the problem. During the meeting, the Canadian wife revealed bruises on her forearm. “I am Muslim and I don't want to go back to my country. I feel estranged here and I know no one. No one can lend me a helping hand and I want to find work which allows me to continue to stay in the birthplace of Islam,” she said. Both the husband and wife reject the idea of the woman leaving the children behind and traveling back to Canada. The wife said that if the husband is financially unable to provide for her and her children, she should be allowed to take them back to Canada. The husband said that the children should stay with their mother but is worried that if she leaves the Kingdom with the children he will never see them again. A similar instance occurred several months ago where a Filipina woman took her children back to the Philippines and disappeared. __
