Saudi Arabia urges dialogue and de-escalation amid Iran tensions, Al-Jubeir says
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 15 - 01 - 2026

RIYADH — "The region needs stability," Saudi Arabia's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Adel Al-Jubeir said, as he addressed questions on escalating tensions involving Iran and warnings of possible US military action.
"Our goal is to achieve stability and calm so that we can direct our resources toward building a better future for our peoples," Al-Jubeir said during remarks at an industrial event in Riyadh.
Responding to questions about speculation over the strength of the Iranian leadership and whether the regime could or should be toppled, Al-Jubeir stressed that Saudi Arabia does not interfere in the internal affairs of other states.
"This matter truly falls to the Iranian people to decide," he said. "I don't believe I'm in a position that entitles me to tell another country how it should be governed."
Al-Jubeir framed the situation within the broader context of prolonged instability across the Middle East, warning of its heavy human and developmental cost.
"The region has suffered a lot over the past 50 to 60 years, in particular over the past 20 years," he said, pointing to conflicts in Syria, Lebanon, Gaza, Sudan, Yemen, Somalia, Iraq and Afghanistan.
He said Saudi Arabia consistently works to reduce tensions and help resolve conflicts whenever opportunities arise.
"Whenever we have the opportunity to work on de-escalating matters and mediating to resolve disputes, we do so," he said, citing Saudi engagement in Syria and Lebanon in the past, ongoing efforts in Gaza with the international community, and mediation initiatives related to Sudan, Somalia and Yemen.
Asked about reports of mounting casualties in Iran and US President Donald Trump's warnings that military action remains an option, Al-Jubeir reiterated the Kingdom's long-standing position.
"Our view has always been dialogue — trying to resolve issues through peaceful means," he said. "Our view has always been to try to find a way out of conflicts."
He added that instability undermines development prospects anywhere.
"We believe in dialogue and solving any disagreements at the negotiating table," he said. "Instability does not support the prospects for development in any region."
Al-Jubeir said the situation in Iran is being closely watched internationally.
"I believe everybody is watching the situation very closely," he said. "And everybody is hoping that the situation can be resolved in a manner that minimizes any kind of damage."
He concluded by reaffirming Saudi Arabia's core objective of promoting calm and stability across the region.
