Published in The Saudi Gazette on 09 - 06 - 2025

RIYADH — The Saudi Film Commission announced its membership in the International Association of Audiovisual Archives (IASA), which includes members from 70 countries representing archival institutions from around the world specializing in the preservation of visual materials, musical recordings, historical and literary works, oral history, and other artifacts. This is a strategic move aimed at strengthening the commission's international presence in the field of audiovisual archiving.
This accession comes as part of the Commission's ongoing efforts to preserve and protect the Kingdom's audiovisual heritage. It aims to develop archiving projects and exchange expertise with leading international institutions in this field.
It also reflect the Commission's commitment to strengthening its position as a leading entity by applying best practices and modern technologies in film archiving, opening new horizons for developing local capabilities in this field. Collaborating with the Association's members will provide opportunities to benefit from the latest technologies and innovations in audiovisual archiving, thus enhancing Saudi Arabia's efforts to protect and preserve its cultural heritage for future generations.
The International Association of Audiovisual Archives (IASA) was founded in 1969 in Amsterdam with the aim of promoting cooperation between archives specializing in the preservation of audiovisual materials.
The association holds an annual conference with the aim of disseminating knowledge and exchanging experiences and expertise in the fields of preservation, restoration, and digitization, protecting intellectual property, and making archival collections available to researchers, interested parties, and the general public.
The commission's membership in the IASA represents another step in its journey towards global leadership in the film archiving sector, as it will work to expand the scope of cooperation with international partners and develop initiatives that contribute to strengthening Saudi Arabias presence in this field.
