Von der Leyen, who has led the EU's strategy of "de-risking" from China — focusing on reducing economic dependence while maintaining engagement — made the remarks during a press conference in Brussels marking the first 100 days of her second term as head of the European Commission. When asked whether a similar approach was necessary with Washington, she responded, "The answer is a clear no," emphasizing that the EU's relationship with the United States is fundamentally different from its ties with China. Her comments come amid heightened geopolitical uncertainty, particularly following the US decision to pause aid to Ukraine and halt intelligence sharing. Von der Leyen described these developments as a "very strong wake-up call" for Europe, reinforcing the need for the bloc to strengthen its own defense capabilities.
