Israeli media reported progress on Sunday in negotiations between the US administration and the Palestinian group Hamas regarding the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza. According to Israeli public broadcaster KAN, US envoy Adam Boehler and Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya have made headway in their discussions. However, there was no immediate confirmation from either Hamas or Washington regarding the claim. US news outlet Axios previously reported on Wednesday that the Donald Trump administration has been engaging in direct talks with Hamas to secure the release of Israeli hostages who hold American citizenship. The reported progress comes as Israel prepares to send a delegation to Qatar on Monday to continue ceasefire negotiations with Hamas. Meanwhile, US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to visit the region on Tuesday to push for an extension of the first phase of the ceasefire agreement. Israeli authorities estimate that 59 hostages remain in Gaza, with at least 22 believed to be alive. Their release is anticipated in a second phase of the ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement, which would require Israel to fully withdraw its forces from Gaza and bring an end to the war. The ceasefire, in effect since January, has temporarily halted Israel's military campaign, which has resulted in the deaths of more than 48,400 people — mostly women and children — and left Gaza in devastation.
