Hamas says it is ready for second phase of ceasefire, warns Israel against delays
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 22 - 02 - 2025

Hamas announced on Saturday its readiness to advance to the second phase of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, emphasizing that the completion of prisoner-hostage exchanges depends on Israel's full compliance with the terms of the deal, particularly regarding humanitarian conditions in the enclave.
As part of the agreement, six Israeli captives are set to be released on Saturday in exchange for 602 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails.
In a statement, Hamas underscored that the exchange demonstrated its commitment to the terms of the ceasefire, which took effect on January 19.
However, the group accused Israel of using "delaying tactics" that hinder the process.
Hamas warned that Israel faces a clear choice: either they receive their prisoners in coffins, as occurred on Thursday due to Netanyahu's arrogance, or they embrace them alive, adhering to the conditions set by the resistance.
The group also accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of attempting to shift focus from military setbacks in Gaza by intensifying military operations in the occupied West Bank, particularly in Jenin, Tulkarem, and Tubas.
Hamas spokesperson Abdul Latif al-Qanou reiterated that the completion of upcoming prisoner exchanges depends on Israel's adherence to the remaining clauses of the agreement and its implementation of the humanitarian protocol.
He accused Israel of failing to fully implement the ceasefire terms, despite 33 days passing since the first phase began.
Hamas called on international mediators to pressure Israel into fulfilling its commitments and ensuring that essential aid and shelter reach Palestinians in Gaza.
The group reaffirmed its readiness for a large-scale prisoner exchange that would include a definitive end to the war, the withdrawal of Israeli forces, and the rebuilding of Gaza.
The three-phase truce, which began last month, halted Israel's military offensive, which has killed more than 48,000 people, mostly women and children, and left Gaza in devastation.
According to the agreement, 33 hostages are to be released during the first phase, which lasts 42 days.
The second phase involves Hamas releasing the remaining hostages in exchange for hundreds more Palestinian prisoners, a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, and a permanent end to hostilities. — Agencies
