Energy minister unveils Saudi Arabia's plans to enrich and sell uranium
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 13 - 01 - 2025

DHAHRAN — Minister of Energy Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman unveiled Saudi Arabia's plans to enrich and sell uranium. "Saudi Arabia plans to invest in all minerals, including uranium. We will enrich it and sell it," he said while addressing the iktva Forum & Exhibition 2025, organized by Saudi Aramco in Dhahran.
Prince Abdulaziz said that Jabal Sayid mineralized belt in the Madinah region contains many minerals, including uranium. "The basic resources for industries will be available to us to achieve energy security," he said.
The energy minister said that Saudi Arabia is working to localize modern technologies and industries, with an emphasis on the petrochemical sector as a key focus for the future.
He stated that more than 60 contracts have been signed in the field of manufacturing to work on clean energy initiatives. "The Kingdom has the ambition to reach 130 gigawatts of renewable energy, with 20 percent of it as backup energy. The Saudi economy will grow and develop more than expected," he said. "We fear that energy will not meet these aspirations, so the right goal must be set regarding energy and the economy, because without energy there is no prosperous future, and we will not achieve this except through hard work," he said.
The minister stressed that the Kingdom is working on the infrastructure that helps in energy transformation and distribution, setting the right points to solve all challenges.
Prince Abdulaziz also noted that Saudi Arabia is working on developing a roadmap for cooperation with Egypt in the field of electricity.
The Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat said last July that the electricity interconnection project with Saudi Arabia would begin operating and connecting to the unified grid before the beginning of next summer. The two countries are working to open new horizons and increase private investments in new and renewable energy projects and joint efforts to invest in solar and wind energy projects.
