Over 6 million students in Saudi Arabia return to school on Sunday
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 17 - 08 - 2024

RIYADH — Over 6 million students in Saudi Arabia are set to return to their school desks on Sunday, August 18, 2024, marking the start of the academic year, following the end of the summer break.
More than 30,000 public, private, international, and foreign schools across the Kingdom have welcomed nearly 500,000 teachers in preparation for the new school year. The return to school coincides with the start of the second-round exams for students who did not pass certain subjects in the first round, as well as the distribution of new textbooks to students.
This year also sees the introduction of Chinese language classes in a select number of intermediate schools, carefully chosen to ensure the success of this initiative. The program aims to evaluate progress at the end of each academic year, with plans to gradually extend Chinese language instruction to third-year high school students by 2029.
In anticipation of the new school year, the past few days have seen a surge in activity at stores and bookstores across the Kingdom, as parents and students prepare for the return to school. Shoppers have been purchasing a wide range of school supplies, including uniforms, bags, shoes, and other essentials, with retailers offering competitive prices and various promotions to meet the diverse needs and tastes of students across different age groups.
On the occasion of the new academic year, the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, Sheikh Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh, emphasized the esteemed position of knowledge in Islam. He pointed out that the first word revealed by Allah to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was "Iqra" (Read).
Sheikh Abdulaziz highlighted the significant responsibility that teachers carry in guiding students towards success in both this world and the hereafter. He urged educators to be sincere, offer good advice, engage in open dialogue with students, listen attentively, and guide them towards what benefits them and strengthens their faith, so they may become valuable members of society.
The Grand Mufti also addressed students, stressing the importance of time management and utilizing their time effectively. He advised them to focus on their studies, learn from their teachers, and listen to the guidance of their parents and leaders to become successful individuals who contribute positively to their families and nation, which spares no effort in supporting and facilitating their happiness and success.
