Royal Commission for Riyadh announces start of King Abdulaziz Park construction
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 24 - 07 - 2024

RIYADH — The Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) has announced the start of implementation work on King Abdulaziz Park, one of the major parks in Riyadh within the "Green Riyadh" projects.
Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman directed to naming the park "King Abdulaziz Park" based on the recommendation of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The project area is about 4.3 million square meters, and its implementation will take 36 months. Its location is distinguished by its proximity to vital sites such as King Khalid International Airport and Princess Noura University. The park is also connected to the train station, making it easy to reach from all parts of the city.
The park has a distinctive design that takes into account the local environment and it has 6 diverse patterns of tree species.
The most prominent feature is the Botanical Garden, which is located in the center of the garden with an area of more than 200,000 square meters and contains more than 200 species of local plants in high density.
It also benefited from Shuaib Al-Munisiyah, branching off from Wadi Al-Sulay, which intersects the garden at a length of more than 11 kilometers and an area of more than 770 km.
A thousand square meters within the botanical garden is dedicated to commercial buildings with sustainable designs that mimic their location in the garden, and a panoramic path overlooking it with a length exceeding 2 kilometers. The other five design patterns include highlands, plains, plateaus, and desert gardens, designed by choosing different trees and shrubs to enhance biodiversity and create an attractive environment for birds, butterflies, and others.
The park will be afforested, bringing the areas shaded by trees to 65% of the total area, by planting more than 2 million trees and shrubs.
It also will contribute to attracting city residents and tourists, as it includes 24 children's play areas and 30 sports areas distributed throughout the park. The Munsiyah has also been utilized, which contributes to lowering the temperature and raising the average walking to more than 6,000 steps per day through wooded paths designed for pedestrians and for practicing running and cycling, with lengths exceeding 115 km.
The"Green Riyadh" project contributes to achieving one of the goals of the Saudi Green Initiative and the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, which is planting 10 billion trees inside the Kingdom, to improve air quality by reducing pollution and dust.
Green Riyadh also enhances the city's global rankings to become one of the "best livable cities of the world."
