Steven Gerrard praises Saudi culture beyond football
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 03 - 10 - 2023

RIYADH — English football legend Steven Gerrard shed light on his decision to venture into a new chapter of his career in Saudi Arabia, expressing his admiration for Saudi culture beyond the realm of football.
Speaking at a panel discussion on Monday during the Riyadh International Book Fair on the topic "Sports and Cultural Exchange," Gerrard emphasized the crucial role of reading and focus in the development of football players, considering both the negative and positive aspects.
As the coach of Al-Ettifaq, Gerrard highlighted Saudi Arabia's leading role in a sports change, particularly in the domain of football. He remarked, "I think it caught the attention of the whole world in newspapers, on television, and in the streets."
Gerrard conveyed his gratitude for the warm welcome he received from Saudi fans, describing the experience of wearing the traditional Saudi attire (thobe) as inspiring a new outfit design due to its comfort and appeal.
Discussing negotiations with Al-Ettifaq this summer, Gerrard revealed: "Al-Ettifaq management provided me with an insufficient time frame to consider the offer to take over coaching the team."
He communicated that he had informed them at the time that he was not prepared to give his opinion on the matter, stating: "The idea of moving from England to Saudi Arabia itself was a significant change."
Gerrard underscored the collective nature of such decisions, saying "If I had made this decision individually, I would have been selfish because this decision is governed by his environment, family, friends, and coaching staff since he would not go to Saudi Arabia alone."
Reflecting on Saudi Arabia's distinctive culture and the current football change, Gerrard emphasized that the development goes beyond sports to include cultural, political, and commercial aspects.
Addressing the differences between his roles as a player and a coach, Gerrard highlighted the increased tension and responsibility that comes with coaching, as it involves leading a team and an entire entity.
He noted: "When you are a player, you focus on your individual development, unlike when you are a coach, you are responsible for many people, preparing them technically in the right way, and you bear the responsibility in case of loss and players entering a stage of frustration."
Regarding potential transfers, Gerrard expressed confidence in the current Al-Ettifaq team, stating, "I believe I have a team that includes distinguished stars now, and if there is a need for a specific player, Al-Ettifaq management is the most aware of what the team needs."
