The King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) here, for the first time, has succeeded in conducting first robotic brain surgery in a bid to reduce risks and ramifications of traditional surgeries that accompany surgeries. This move is in line with KFSHRC's message in providing the highest healthcare levels and best experiments for the benefit of the patients. A surgical team, led by the head of the neurological department at the hospital consultant Dr. Mohammed Bin Mahfouth, neurosurgery consultant Dr. Saleh Baissa and neurosurgery associate consultant Dr. Afnan Al-Khotani, performed the surgery. The surgery was aimed at extracting a sample (biopsy) to examine and determine the presence or degree of the disease. Dr. Mahfouth explained that the use of the robot in brain surgery is effective in identifying the points to be targeted surgically with infinite precision, which makes patients avoid side complications in traditional surgeries. He added that the use of the robot enables surgeons to perform thorough and complex surgeries that may not be possible with other methods, and that the use of this technique has expanded to include micro-epilepsy surgeries and other motion diseases. The robotic surgical system includes a camera-equipped arm, automatic arms connected to surgical instruments, through which the surgeon controls the arms.
