No more room for compromise on Iran nuclear deal, EU warns
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 28 - 07 - 2022

The European Union on Thursday stressed that there is no more room left for compromise on the Iran nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and called for key decisions to renew it.
"The space for compromise is now exhausted. We need to take decisions now. There is no longer any additional space for any further compromise. Therefore, we need to work based on the proposal by High Representative Josep Borrell, "Peter Stano, EU Lead Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs, told a news conference in Brussels.
He said Josep Borrell on Tuesday proposed a text on the Iran nuclear deal, which is being discussed by the partners of the JCPOA.
"Message from the High Representative is that now is the time for key decisions to be taken to renew the nuclear agreement. That is the priority," he said.
"We never comment on the position of individual countries that are parties to the nuclear deal. We are waiting for a constructive position from third parties. The priority is to have a consensus on the text and return to the full implementation of the nuclear deal," Stano said.
Former US President Donald Trump re-imposed financial and economic sanctions on Tehran after his withdrawal in 2018 from the Iran nuclear deal talks, which was agreed by Iran and major powers in 2015.
The talks began in Vienna, Austria, in April 2021 with the participation of the remaining parties, France, Germany, the UK, Russia, and China, as well as the European Union, which is acting as the coordinator.
The negotiations in Vienna were paused last March due to outstanding differences. — Agencies
