Saudi Arabia rebuffs move to politicize human rights issues
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 01 - 11 - 2021

NEW YORK — Saudi Arabia has roundly rejected all attempts to politicize human rights issues after taking them out of their normal context.
"Saudi Arabia rejects those attempts being made specifically by those countries that commit human rights violations and at the same time criticize others, ignoring their weaknesses and mistakes," said Ambassador Abdullah Al-Mouallimi, Saudi Arabia's permanent representative to the United Nations.
He also emphasized that no country in the world has provided so much of humanitarian, economic and medical assistance to the Yemeni people as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has done.
Attending the deliberations of the UN General Assembly on the resolution of the Human Rights Council, titled "Technical assistance and capacity-building for Yemen in the field of human rights," Al-Mouallimi affirmed the Kingdom's firm position in support of international law and the principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.
He welcomed the Council's approval of the resolution, saying that its adoption by consensus confirms the keenness of the member states and the international community to support the efforts of the Yemeni National Commission and its reports, which it issues in accordance with international standards to find a realistic solution to the Yemeni crisis.
Al-Mouallimi welcomed the Council members' rejection of the resolution titled "The situation of human rights in Yemen", which was presented by the Netherlands during the 48th session of the Council.
"The Council members' rejection of the resolution confirms their conviction that the Group of Eminent Experts (GEE) on Yemen is unprofessional in drafting their biased reports that ignored international initiatives and resolutions that are the basis for resolving the Yemeni crisis, foremost of which is Security Council Resolution 2216, as well as the group's abuse of the mandate granted to it in an unprecedented manner.
"The group from those countries ignored the international resolutions that are the basis for resolving the Yemeni crisis," he said while pointing out that these countries had obtained their information from an unprofessional Group of Experts, after it had obtained its information from unreliable and biased sources of the Houthi coup militia.
Al-Mouallimi reiterated that the only way to end the suffering of the Yemeni people and the Yemeni crisis lies in the Yemeni parties reaching a political solution in accordance with international references and international and regional initiatives, the latest of which was the Kingdom's initiative for a ceasefire and the resumption of political dialogue.
"The countries that politicize these issues today are not immune to crimes and violations against human rights within and outside their borders, and this is evident from their human rights records," he said while calling on the international community to take a sincere and serious stand against the politicization of human rights issues.
