Taking up cudgels
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 09 - 04 - 2013

A huge round of applause for Ms Somayya Jabarti.....She has put in print (A expat-less Saudi Arabia… in Saudi Gazette April 7)what has been in the minds of expatriates...and same goes for Mahmoud Ahmed (Expatriate workers' dignity is our dignity in Saudi Gazette April 8) and many others who speak for the poor expatriates. They did not come here of their will alone.
Someone brought them here — a Saudi — who is allowed to walk free after taking money from these poor people for transfer or the permission to work under some other sponsor. It is true that it is the poorer section of expatriates who suffer through these unthinking and rash decisions. Many who have mortgaged their houses or land or wife's jewelry to come here and send some money home so that his family can live fairly comfortably!
Most of them just scrape through every month on the meager salary they get.
I was appalled to hear about the salary given to the cleaners in Baladiyah etc. I cannot imagine Saudis working at the ports, construction sites, garbage and sewage collection and disposal and numerous other menial jobs.
Maybe the people behind the Nitaqat suddenly realized that the country will come to a standstill and rot with garbage..... anyway cheers to all who uphold the “guest worker's “ rights !
