RIYADH — Saudi Arabia on Friday celebrated the Arab Literacy Day, which falls on Jan. 8 every year. As part of the celebration, the Ministry of Education implemented 1,142 e-training programs, benefiting more than 29,000 individuals, and adopted Jubail Industrial City as a Saudi education city as part of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities. Amid the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, the ministry implemented a number of programs and initiatives by launching remote education, developing standards for elementary school curricula and the literacy society program curricula, and updating the regulatory framework for the summer campaign program to raise awareness and eradicating illiteracy. Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education for educational programs Dr. Maha Abdullah Al-Suleiman said that the Kingdom's participation with the Arab countries in celebrating the Arab Literacy Day aims to eradicate all types of illiteracy and focus on literacy. The ministry also seeks to renew commitment to fighting illiteracy and reducing its negative effects on the lives of individuals by working to provide quality learning opportunities in line with the Kingdom's 2030 Vision.
