Global coronavirus cases crosses 72.7m; death toll hits 1.62m

As many as 72.7 million (72,757,242) people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally and 1,620,971 have died, according to a worldodometer tally. It reported that there have been 50,985,524 cases of global recoveries.
Coronavirus is continuing its spread across the world with about 72 million confirmed cases in 190 countries and more than 1.6 million deaths. The virus is surging in many regions and countries that had apparent success in suppressing initial outbreaks are also seeing infections rise again.
The US has recorded more than 16 million cases and nearly 300,000 deaths from coronavirus, the highest figures in the world. Daily cases have been at record levels since early November and there are now over 100,000 people in hospital, more than in either of the two previous waves.
The US has recorded almost 220,000 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours as the confirmed cases nation-wide surpassed 16 million. According to Johns Hopkins University, the US recorded 219,510 new COVID-19 cases and 2,368 new deaths.
The tally showed that the confirmed cases nationwide reached 16,062,299 and at least 297,818 deaths. Furthermore coronavirus hospitalizations in the US hit a record high of 108,487, according to COVID Tracking Project. The US ranks first globally in the number of coronavirus cases and deaths.
India and Brazil have the second and third highest case tallies, recording some 9.8 and 7 million cases respectively. Infections have been reported in more than 218 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.
Russia on Monday confirmed 27,328 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, including 5,874 in Moscow, pushing the national tally to 2,681,256. Authorities said 450 people had died overnight, taking the official death toll to 47,391.
The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany increased by 16,362 to 1,337,078 and the death toll rose by 188 to 21,975, data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases showed on Monday. The numbers are usually lower on Mondays, because there is less testing and less data being transmitted to the RKI on weekends.
Germany responded to the second wave of the deadly pandemic by shutting hospitality businesses as well as leisure and sports facilities. Schools and non-essential shops have, however, remained open.
The total number of coronavirus cases in Ukraine has exceeded 900,000, health minister Maksym Stepanov said on Monday. He said 6,451 new cases were registered in the past 24 hours together with new 93 virus-related deaths.
In Paris, France on Sunday recorded 11,533 new confirmed COVID-19 cases and 150 coronavirus-induced deaths, in the past 24 hours. The tally of the confirmed cases and mortalities rose to 2,376,852 and 57,911 respectively, the French Ministry of Health said in a statement.
In London, the tally of confirmed coronavirus-induced fatalities across the UK grew by 144 to 64,170, heath authorities said on Sunday. Some 18,447 more COVID-19 cases were also registered in the country over the last 24 hours, pushing the overall count to over 1.849 million, said the Department of Health.
In Rome, the tally of confirmed coronavirus-induced fatalities rose to 64,520 on Sunday after registering 484 more deaths in 24 hours in Italy. The Ministry of Health said 17,938 more infections were confirmed in the same period, to raise the total in one of the world's worst-affected countries to 1,843,712. Italy has overtaken Britian as the country with the highest death toll from the outbreak in Europe.
In Brussels, total infections of coronavirus cases in Belgium on Monday increased to 608,137 with 2,171 new infections reported by Belgian health authorities. Up to 49 more deaths from COVID-19 were reported in the last 24 hours raising the total death toll to 17,951.
In Vienna, Austria registered on Monday 2,588 additional cases of COVID-19, increasing the number of total confirmed infections to 322,588. The Federal Ministry of Social Affair, Health, Care, and Consumer Protection said that over three million tests were conducted, indicating that 284,000 recovered, whereas the death toll hit 4,530.
In New Delhi, India said on Monday that 336 people died due to COVID-19 while 27,071 new cases of the coronavirus were registered in the past 24 hours, taking its total to 9,884,100, data from the Health Ministry showed on Monday. Deaths due to COVID-19 totaled 143,355.
According to the ministry, 9,388,159 people recuperated from the pandemic as it spread to 35 states. India has the world's second-highest caseload, but daily infections have dipped steadily since hitting a peak in September.
In Seoul, South Korea reported 718 more COVID-19 cases on Monday, raising the total caseload to 43,484, according to the Yonhap agency. The country reported seven additional deaths, raising the total to 587, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.
Of the locally transmitted cases, Seoul accounted for 217 cases and the surrounding Gyeonggi Province took up 220. On Sunday the country reported its largest daily caseload ever of 1,030 new coronavirus cases.
In Tokyo, Japan reported 1,088 new cases of coronavirus on Monday, raising the nation's total number to 181,718, the Health Ministry and local authorities said. The country's cumulative death toll stood at 2,629. Tokyo added 305 new infections, dipping below 400 for the first time in six days, which brought the total cases in the Japanese capital to 47,530.
In Latin America, Brazil has nearly seven million confirmed cases and the world's second highest death toll. The country is currently seeing a second surge in infections. Argentina, Colombia and Mexico have also recorded more than one million cases and all three countries are still seeing very high numbers of daily confirmed cases.
Peru is also approaching the milestone of one million cases, although daily cases are falling. The country has one of the highest deaths rates in the world.
Africa has recorded more than two million cases, but the true extent of the pandemic there is not known as testing rates are low. South Africa, with more than 800,000 cases and nearly 23,000 deaths, is the worst affected country on the continent.
Morocco, Egypt, Ethiopia and Tunisia are the only other African countries to officially record more than 100,000 cases.
In Cairo, the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population said on Sunday that 486 more people tested positive for the novel coronavirus and 22 patients died over the past 24 hours. The figures took the country's tally to 121,575 infections and 6,920 deaths the ministry said. Another 165 patients have been discharged from the hospitals, bringing the overall recoveries to 104,875.
In Tunis the Tunisia's Ministry of Health said on Sunday that 968 people tested positive for the novel coronavirus bringing the country's caseload to 101,379. Fifty-eight more fatalities were registered over the past 24 hours, pushing the death toll to 3,8946 deaths. Meanwhile the overall recoveries went up to 84,741.
* Meanwhile, Mauritania's Ministry of Health said Sunday that 191 persons tested positive for the novel coronavirus bringing the country's caseload to 10,971. Three more fatalities, registered over the past 24 hours, pushed the death toll from the viral illness to 225. — Agencies
