Global coronavirus cases cross 44.2 million India passes bleak landmark of 8mn COVID-19 infections

More than 44.2 million people have been infected with coronavirus globally and 1,169,580 have died, according to a Reuters tally published on Thursday.
Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.
In the United States, another 80,662 coronavirus cases were reported on Wednesday. The US also reported an additional 996 deaths over the past 24 hours.
According to NBC report, the number of new cases surpassed the previous high of 79,303, set last Friday.
However, the figure still falls short of a separate daily total reported by Johns Hopkins University on Saturday.
Meanwhile, India crossed a grim milestone of 8 million coronavirus cases on Thursday, with a daily rise of 49,881 infections, data compiled by the country's health ministry showed.
The world's second most populous nation also has the second highest tally of infections after the US, which has so far recorded 8.8 million.
Cases in India have dipped sharply from September's peak, but experts warn the current festival season could bring another spike.
The death toll has been low relative to infections, with 517 new deaths in the last 24 hours carrying the total to 120,527, according to the ministry.
In China, officials said on Thursday that they received reports of 47 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Chinese mainland on Wednesday, including 23 that were domestically transmitted and 24 imported.
According to China's state news agency, Xinhua, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in mainland China now stands at 85,915, while the death toll remained unchanged at 4,634.
Indonesia reported 3,565 new coronavirus infections on Thursday, taking the total to 404,048, data from the country's health ministry showed.
The data also showed 89 additional deaths, bringing total fatalities to 13,701. Indonesia's cases and deaths from COVID-19 are the most in Southeast Asia.
In Russia, coronavirus cases rose by 17,717 in the past day, a record high since the start of the pandemic, the anti-coronavirus crisis center reported on Thursday.
The country's total case tally grew to 1,581,693. The average growth rate climbed to 1.1 percent.
Over the past 24 hours, some 4,906 cases were confirmed in Moscow, 758 in St. Petersburg, 514 in the Moscow Region, 386 in Nizhny Novgorod Region and 319 in Arkhangelsk Region.
The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany increased by 16,774 to 481,013, data from the Robert Koch Institute for infectious diseases showed on Thursday. The reported death toll rose by 89 to 10,272, the tally showed.
Belarus announced on Thursday that 85,332 patients previously diagnosed with COVID-19 have recovered and have been released from hospitals.
The press service of the Belarusian Healthcare Ministry told Belarus news agency, BelTA, that nationwide tally of COVID-19 cases has reached 96,529 people, noting that 2,444,162 coronavirus tests have been performed so far.
A total of 973 coronavirus patients suffering from a number of chronic diseases have died, the Healthcare Ministry said. — Agencies
