Published in The Saudi Gazette on 23 - 09 - 2020

Under the patronage of Sheikh Mohamed Bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, president of the Supreme Council of Health, the Neuroscience Association of the Bahrain Medical Society (BMS) organized the "11th Gulf Neurology meeting " remotely — in line with precautionary measures to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic. More than 1,000 participants joined the remote meeting from Bahrain, GCC, and Arab countries, in addition to many participants from European countries, Canada, Australia and others.
Lt. Gen. Dr. Sheikh Mohamed stressed that holding this meeting, despite the pandemic's delicate circumstances, is a role model for other medical specialties. He indicated in a recorded speech the importance of this meeting in exchanging experiences and discussing the most recent developments in the field of neurology, expressing the Supreme Council of Health's support for the meeting's recommendations.
"11th Gulf Neurology meeting" included 52 scientific lectures in which 40 lecturers spoke from Bahrain, the region and the world. The number of views of the meeting from inside Bahrain reached more than 2,700 views, and nearly 4,200 viewers from GCC states, Arab and foreign countries, while more than 200 doctors attended the meeting.
The meeting reviewed the latest treatment developments for the most widespread neurological diseases of concern to patients in Bahrain, including Stroke and Neurocritical care, Headache, Neuromuscular Disorders, Parkinson's Disease and other Movement Disorders, Multiple Sclerosis, NMO and Autoimmune Neurology, Neurogenetics and Neuroinfectious Diseases, Epilepsy, and Dementias.
One of the meeting workshops focused in particular on strokes, and a large part of the meeting was also devoted to talking about epilepsy. Dr. Samuel Wiebe, president of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE), presented a valuable lecture on this epilepsy. This is considered the 1st Bahrain League against Epilepsy Meeting after the Kingdom officially joined the League in May 2019.
The president of the Neurosciences Association at the Bahrain Medical Society and head of the Organizing Committee, Dr. Fatima Abdullah, expressed her thanks to the meeting 's sponsor and all the participants, lecturers and partners who fulfilled a prominent role in its success. She said that the meeting lectures have been uploaded to the meeting website and will remain there to provide an opportunity for any concerned party to benefit from them. — SG
