Smile initiative distributes gifts to kids with cancer in their homes
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 29 - 07 - 2020

Volunteers in Smile Initiative, an initiative of Bahrain Future Society for Youth, which provides psychosocial support to children with cancer and their parents in Bahrain, distributed gifts to kids with cancer at their houses. This was done at the start of the summer vacation to encourage them to stay at home following precautionary measures to tackle (COVID-19). Due to their weak immunity, kids with cancer are required to maintain social distancing as this pandemic poses a significant danger to their lives.
The volunteers of the Smile initiative were keen to directly deliver the gifts to the kids with cancer as a surprise to please and comfort him. This delivery took place amid full precautionary measures such as sterilizing the gift and wearing masks and gloves, assure that the child washes his hands regularly, implement social distancing, and wears facemasks in various necessary conditions. The initiative also made sure to select exciting educational gifts that capture the child's attention and offer fun and learning opportunities at the same time.
Safaa Al Nasser, member of the board of directors of Future Society for Youth, said that distributing gifts to kids with cancer aims to achieve several goals, including maintaining effective communication with sick children and their families in these challenging times and making them happy providing psychological support to them.
"The distribution of these gifts comes as a continuation of many initiatives that were implemented previously, as the initiative successfully organized at the beginning of last April the first campaign of distributing protective bags. These bags contain an integrated package of masks, gloves, and sterilizers for children and their families, followed in May by the second campaign of distributing these bags after doubling its contents. This reinforces the initiative's eagerness to achieve effective benefit in protecting sick children from (COVID-19)," Al Nasser added.
The volunteers of the Smile Initiative managed to deliver these gifts to the houses of sick children in diverse regions, cities, and villages of Bahrain, explaining how to utilize it properly.
The Smile Initiative also launched a remote summer camp directed at developing the skills and talents of sick children, entertaining them, and aiding them to improve their behavioral, social, and psychological activities. Smile implements this camp remotely within the initiative's keenness to continue presenting useful programs to its affiliates of sick children, despite the challenges posed by the pandemic (COVID-19). — SG
