Dogged determination: Dubai's utility authority puts robot dogs to work
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 14 - 07 - 2020

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority is piloting four-legged dog-like robots for internal operations such as maintenance and quality assurance as the utility authority seeks to provide quality and timely services to consumers in the emirate.
"DEWA has started testing the different uses of the Spot Robots in its internal operations, becoming the first utility in the region to use this robot, developed by Boston Dynamics, the utility authority said in a statement on Monday."
"DEWA will use it in detecting faults, testing connection points of high-voltage cables, detecting leakage in water pipes, conducting security and monitoring patrols."
The move is the authority's strategy to use the latest technologies and adopt artificial intelligence in its different operations.
The authority intends to use Spot Robots in detecting faults, testing connection points of high-voltage cables, detecting leakage in water pipes, conducting security and monitoring patrols, ensuring construction works are aligned with specifications using multiple-angle cameras, and managing different facilities such as warehouses, in addition to helping people of determination.
"Adopting the Spot Robots in Dewa's internal operations is part of our strategy to use the latest AI and robotic technologies. This contributes to achieving the UAE's strategy for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which aims to strengthen the UAE's position as a global hub for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and increase its contribution to a knowledge-based national economy that depends on innovation and future technological application," said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dewa.
"It also supports the Dubai 10X initiative, which mandates the Government of Dubai to become a global leader that is 10 years ahead of all other cities through government innovation and reshaping traditional work mechanisms." — Agencies
